Sustainable Communities

Aside from individually changing your daily lives to become more sustainable, it is also very beneficial to do things as a community. Many communities have decided to become more local in order to be more sustainable. When saying “to become more local,” this means that people either grow their own fruits and vegetables, or get their foods from a place that sells things that have been grown locally. It is amazing how much more eco-efficient it is to buy local foods as opposed to supporting the foods that have been driven thousands of miles in 18 wheelers.

Some examples of ways in which communities have come together to make where they live more sustainable are:

1) As mentioned before, buying foods locally benefits the environment an abundant amount.

2) Recently I have found that many communities have created this idea of “time share in a care.” The idea of this is when you don’t own a specific care but you invest a monthly amount of money in order to be able to use a car when necessary. This discourages the temptation of hopping in your car on a daily basis and encourages you to only use a car when needed. It really makes you think twice about if you really need to drive your car or if there is other means of transportation.

3) In several African countries their communities are becoming more sustainable. They have created ways in which nothing goes to waste. The waste of producing one thing is food or materials to produce another thing. Thus, no waste is being put into the environment and everything is being used. It is important that we use as much waste that we have created as we can.

Sustainable Development

Author: admin - Published 2011-04-28 22:41 - Expires 2012-04-27 22:41 - (1259 Reads)

The issue of the destruction of our environment and the increase of poverty are huge global issues today and both relate to each other because they effect one another, yet they are resolved using separate means. Thus, it takes a lot of time and money invested in order to help diminish both of these issues.

Some examples of why this has become such a global issue is because in order to reduce the amount of poverty, especially in developing countries, the environment has to be sacrificed in some way. This is where the idea of sustainable development comes into play. The term “sustainable development” would be the solution to this issue, yet it takes a lot of time and money just as mentioned before. Ultimately, sustainable development would be the ideal answer to many of our global problems.

A helpful solution to this problem for the meantime would be to invest your own individual time in helping the poor so that less of the environment has to be sacrificed.
